Every child. Every chance. Every day. is not only our department’s motto, but a guiding philosophy that drives our department’s initiatives and strategies to ensure that Alabama achieves our goals and that the 748,000 children who cross the thresholds into our public schools every day are prepared to become more productive, responsible citizens when they graduate and enter the workforce. From the first day of kindergarten until graduation day, every child should be afforded every chance to succeed in school. Our aspiration is that with our support, all children will seize the opportunities, rise to the challenges, and overcome any barriers in their way.
As State Superintendent, a former educator, a parent, and a lifelong advocate for education, I assure you I am committed to continuing to improve education in Alabama. We are focused on innovative initiatives outlined in our strategic plan, Alabama Achieves, including the Alabama Literacy Act, Alabama Numeracy Act, STEM education, Career Technical Education, and workforce development.
We remain committed to working with our elected officials, local school systems, educators, boards, advocates, and other parties to move education in Alabama forward. And, through the leadership of our Governor, State Board, and Legislature – we are making progress and can see results.
Alabama has made significant changes resulting in improvements in student outcomes. In 2022, Alabama was the only state that showed improvement in both reading and math, rising 12 spots, on The Nation’s Report Card – NAEP. Alabama high school graduation and college and career readiness rates have increased with Alabama’s high school seniors graduating at 91% and ranking first in the nation for 2020. Alabama leads the nation in COVID recovery and continues to rise in national rankings including being recognized as one of the top six states in the nation for Computer Science and fifth in the nation for Financial Literacy. Alabama has also been named first in the South-Central Region for workforce development.
Professional development opportunities for educators have expanded with Alabama being ranked top five in the nation for the number of new National Board Certified Teachers – and more than18,000 early childhood education teachers being trained on the science of reading and 97 teachers becoming Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALTs).
At ALSDE, we are entrusted not only with the education of our students but with the future of our state – and we will continue to work diligently to improve education in Alabama.
