Salary Range: $49,267.20-$100,651.20

Position Location: Charter Schools & Specialized Treatment Centers, Birmingham & Montgomery

Open Date: April 2024


The Charter Schools and Specialized Treatment Centers Section, of the Alabama State Department of Education in Birmingham and Montgomery, intends to fill three (3) Education Specialist I positions (Education Specialist-30122).

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  • Make site visits to Charter Schools and Specialized Treatment Centers (STCs) to offer support, provide technical assistance, and conduct compliance monitoring reviews.
  • Provide professional development training opportunities for LEA Charter School authorizer applicants, STC staff, ALSDE staff, LEA staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Routine monitoring of the online platforms for STCs and LEA Charter School Authorizers for submission of required documents.
  • Create and edit manuals or guidance documents related to STCs and Charter Schools.
  • Compile and analyze data related to STCs and Charter schools for written dissemination or oral presentations.
  • Review submitted documents related to compliance with the Alabama Administrative Code for STCs and Charter Schools.
  • Work with various stakeholders to ensure the appropriate application and understanding of the Alabama Administrative Code for STCs, LEA Charter School Authorizers, and Charter Schools.
  • Compose emails and other forms of correspondence concerning STCs, LEA Charter School Authorizing, and/or Charter Schools to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education:

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in an approved subject matter or education specialty area.
  • Five (5) years of professional experience in teaching, education administration, and/or a related assignment, including at least three (3) years of professional experience working with students in alternative learning environments, counseling, school administration, and other related fields.

Experience:

  • Knowledge of Special Education, Americans with Disabilities Act policies strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of alternative educational environments for students with mental health needs, behavioral needs, and or other specialized needs.
  • Computer related skills to include: Microsoft Office 365 (required); Adobe Suite, PowerSchool Student Management System.
