Position Title: Education Specialist I
Position Code: 30122
Salary Range: $49,267.20 – $100,651.20
Position Location: Special Education Services, Montgomery or Birmingham
The Special Education Services (SES) Section of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) in Montgomery, intends to fill multiple Education Specialist I positions.
Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Verify compliance with federal and state laws and regulations governing the educational rights of children with disabilities.
- Assist LEAs by providing universal, targeted, and intensive technical assistance related to special education topics.
- Compose and proof documents, correspondence, and emails.
- Respond to requests received from local education agency staff, state agency staff, officials, and the general public by telephone, emails, letters, and visits.
- Research, compile, and develop documents and manuals that reflect current regulations and practices in special education.
- Collaborate on projects and initiatives with individuals in the section, department, and/or other agencies.
- Utilize office software programs in order to increase efficiency in correspondence, communication, and meeting deadlines.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
These positions are based in Montgomery, AL, or Birmingham, AL, and can require extensive travel around the state.
Education:
- Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in special education (or a field directly related to special education e.g., psychometry, school psychology, or educational leadership).
Minimum Requirements:
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in teaching, education administration, or a related assignment.
- Minimum of three years of professional experience in special education (or a field directly related to special education e.g., psychometry, school psychology, or educational leadership).

- Understanding of policies, laws, and guidelines related to special education including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and individualized education programs (IEPs).
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
