The Special Education Services (SES) Section of the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) intends to fill one (1) Education Specialist I position for gifted education.
This position is based in Montgomery, AL, or Birmingham, AL, and can require extensive travel around the state.
Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Develop and interpret the gifted section of the Alabama Administrative Code (AAC).
- Develop and approve evaluation requirements including appropriate aptitude assessments, behavior rating scales, and performance indicators for gifted referral process and gifted identification.
- Provide technical assistance activities to support LEAs regarding gifted education programming.
- Conduct on-site and desk reviews of gifted compliance monitoring activities to ensure adherence to the Alabama Administrative Code.
- Research, compile, and develop guidance documents and manuals that reflect current best practices in gifted education, curriculum, and programming.
- Develop and present information regarding gifted education at conferences, meetings, and workshops.
- Collaborate on department projects and initiatives to support LEAs, outside organizations, and other agencies to support gifted education.
- Manage and monitor gifted allocations, requisitions, professional memberships, and grant awards.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education:
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university with certification in gifted education required.
Experience:
- Minimum of five years of professional experience in teaching, education administration, or a related assignment, including three years of professional experience in gifted education.
- Experience as a Gifted Coordinator/Director preferred, but not required.

- Thorough knowledge of the AAC requirements for Gifted.
- Thorough knowledge of gifted education programming and curriculum design.
- Extensive knowledge of Alabama Gifted Standards and Student Outcomes.
- Thorough understanding of gifted compliance monitoring.
- Thorough understanding of concept-based unit design.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent people skills.
- Strong organization and data management skills.
- Knowledge of PowerSchool Special Programs.
- Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite.
- Ability to be flexible.
- Effective with problem-solving.
- Strong motivational skills.
- Research skills.
