Adjunct Instructor Permit
The Adjunct Instructor Permit may be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible nonpublic/private school administrator for an individual to serve as an adjunct instructor. The Adjunct Instructor Permit allows an individual to be employed on a less than half-time basis and is not eligible for benefits. It may be requested for any grades 6-12 or P-12 teaching field (except special education).The individual must:
1. Provide verification of high school graduation or its equivalent
2. Work under a mentor who is designated as the teacher of record, and
3. If requested in health science or a technical education program area, current business and industry certification is required.
Certification Based On Test (CBT)
The Certification Based on Test Approach is for an individual seeking additional certification in the selected teaching field(s) if:
1. A valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in a teaching field is held; AND
2. A passing score the appropriate Alabama prescribed Praxis subject area test(s) is attained; AND
3. A passing score on the Foundations of Reading 190 test (for certain teaching fields, see general information).
Council For Accreditation of Counseling Related Educational Programs (CACREP)
The CACREP Approach is for an individual who has completed at least a master’s degree level CACREP-accredited school counseling program and meets the requirements for Alabama certification in school counseling.
Driver and Traffic Safety Education
The Driver and Traffic Safety Education Approach is for an individual seeking additional certification in Driver and Traffic Safety Education if:
1. A valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate or Alabama Professional Leadership Certificate is held; AND
2. Credit has been earned for the required basic and advanced driver education coursework.
Dyslexia Therapist
The Dyslexia Therapist Endorsement Approach is for an individual who holds a valid Alabama Professional Educator Certificate in a teaching field and meets the specified training and assessment requirements.
Early Childhood Development
The Early Childhood Development Approach is for an individual who has completed a bachelor’s level National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) – accredited program in child development for birth through age 4.
Emergency
An individual cannot request an Emergency Certificate. The Emergency Certificate may ONLY be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible nonpublic/private school administrator for an individual who has earned at least a bachelor’s degree from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned. This is a two-year certificate that can be requested for an additional two years if necessary. This certificate does not lead to Alabama professional certification.
Foreign Credentials
The Foreign Credential Approach is for an individual who has completed an educator preparation program in another country and may meet the requirements for Alabama certification.
Interim Employment Certificate (IEC)
The Interim Employment Certificate (IEC) facilitates employment for individuals who have been unconditionally admitted to a master’s or education specialist’s level State-approved educator preparation program or a master’s level CACREP- accredited school counseling program at an ALABAMA college/university.
The IEC may be requested for the following categories of individuals:
1. Those unconditionally admitted to an Alternative Class A Program provided by an ALABAMA college or university; OR
2. Those unconditionally admitted to a Traditional Class A Program provided by an ALABAMA college or university in an area of special education, English for Speakers of Other Languages, Instructional Leadership, Library Media, School Counseling, and Reading Specialist; OR
3. Those unconditionally admitted to a Traditional Class AA Program provided by an ALABAMA college or university in an area of Special Education.
Certification based on the Interim Employment Certificate (IEC) Approach may only be requested by an employing Alabama city/county superintendent or eligible nonpublic/private school administrator; OR
4. Those unconditionally admitted to a CACREP- accredited school counseling program at an ALABAMA college/university.
An individual should contact the Alabama college/university in which they have been unconditionally admitted prior to contacting the school system in which employment is desired.
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)
The NBPTS Approach is for an individual who holds valid NBPTS certificate and may meet the requirements for Alabama certification.
National School Psychologist
The National School Psychologist Approach is for an individual who is certified as a National School Psychologist and meets the requirements for Alabama certification.
Substitute License
An individual cannot request the Substitute License. A substitute license may ONLY be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible nonpublic/private school administrator for an individual who has graduated from high school or completed an Alabama State Department of Education approved equivalent.
